Creating doodle art using the reMarkable tablet

I am always intrigued with advances in technology and how they can actually be of benefit to us. 

Over 6 years ago, I started to read up on these new e-ink paper like tablets that were hitting the market. We already had the iPad and the Samsung tablets, but these were geared towards entertainment, social media etc. in a connected world. I was interested in something that was not connected all the time and would allow me to take notes, do some drawing and even allow me to load and create music scores.

So, I bit the bullet and bought myself a reMarkable tablet. This was a gamble at the time as the company was quite new and was competing in a market that was quickly being populated by rival new products.

To this day I still have my original reMarkable tablet and luckily for me, a lot of the software updates coming through have been compatible with my device.

I managed to replace my physical notebooks and printed music with my reMarkable tablet. More importantly I started exploring the drawing and sketching opportunities that the tablet provided. Whilst not fully replacing basic paper-based sketching and drawing, the table proved very useful, particularly suiting my style of doodle-based drawing.

One of first large scale drawings incorporating a Bull and surrounding doodle ended by being the inspiration for creating a full suite of Zodiac based designs and doodles. I managed to test the limits of the reMarkable tablet with some doodle file sizes being almost to large for the tablet handle.

I also started to convert previous paper-based doodles into PDFs and loading these onto my tablet allowing me to refresh and update many older doodles and giving them new life. Many of these have ended up as artwork on hoodies and t-shirts.

My tablet will never fully replace basic pen on paper artworks, but the portability and ease of use make this device a handy addition to my creative tool set.
